Issue 31 Volume 2 / Winter 2025

The Winter Issue 2025 of Irregular Magazine is now available, and it’s a packed edition that leans heavily into alternate history, classic gaming, and rich historical inspiration for the tabletop hobby.

This issue opens with our usual Editorial and Editor’s Challenge, where Jason continues his ongoing hobby journey — from Gaslands vehicle conversions and WWII Bolt Action forces to fantasy figures, Roman civilians, and terrain projects across multiple scales. It’s a familiar and inspiring look at keeping the painting desk busy through the colder months.

For newcomers and veterans alike, we include a substantial Beginner’s Guide to Gaslands, breaking down what makes this high-octane vehicular combat game so accessible, creative, and fun — from sourcing Hot Wheels cars to building your first weaponised wrecks and getting them onto the tabletop.

Historical and “what-if” wargaming fans are particularly well served this issue. We explore Invasions of the UK and how the English Channel repeatedly frustrated French ambitions, before diving into Peak District Skirmishes, using real British landscapes as inspiration for immersive tabletop encounters. From there, we move into ancient warfare with Forged in Iron & Fire, a deep look at the Rise of Rome, covering Samnites, Gauls, Pyrrhic Wars, and the Punic Wars as fertile ground for campaigns and battles.

Armour enthusiasts are spoilt for choice, with multiple features on tanks — including Iron Giants on the Somme, recreating the very first tank battles of World War I, and a broader historical overview of how tanks reshaped the Great War. If you like your history muddy, unreliable, and full of mechanical breakdowns, this one’s for you.

For those who prefer crime, intrigue, and narrative skirmishing, The Gangs of Old Shanghai offers a richly atmospheric look at interwar gang warfare, corruption, and espionage in the “Paris of the East”, complete with scenario hooks and ruleset suggestions.

Alternate history takes centre stage with A Very British Civil War, revisiting the much-loved community setting where Britain fractures in 1938. From Anglican militias to local defence leagues and improvised armoured cars, it’s a wonderfully eccentric and deeply personal approach to tabletop storytelling.

Fantasy gamers aren’t left out either. We review Dragonbane: Bestiary and Path of Glory, examining how Free League continues to expand the Dragonbane RPG with evocative monsters and classic sword-and-sorcery campaign play. We also take a nostalgic look back at Warhammer Quest (1995), revisiting one of Games Workshop’s most beloved dungeon-crawl classics.

Finally, we mark a major milestone with Chaosium Turns 50, celebrating half a century of role-playing history from RuneQuest to Call of Cthulhu — and the community that made it all possible.

As always, the Winter Issue 2025 is filled with ideas to spark new projects, inspire campaigns, and keep the dice rolling through the darker months.

Grab a warm drink, clear some table space, and enjoy another thoroughly Irregular issue.
